All regular pages can be edited. The front page needs to be able to be edited as well.
The Welcome piece on the front page needs to be editable. Maybe make it a block?
Also, we need ability to post Recent updates, which will show on front page like this:

Allow for the Story content type. But any content type can be promoted to that area, use the Promote to front page value.
(You probably want to use Views to accomplish this easily, make both Welcome and Recent be blocks?)
